Majuli: day trip from Jorhat or stay overnight?
Quick answer
A day trip works if you leave Jorhat by about 7 am and accept seeing 3 or 4 satras and a mask-making village before the afternoon ferry.
Stay overnight if you want sunset on the river, evening prayers at a satra, or the November Raas festival.
- Must-sees: Auniati, Dakhinpat, Kamalabari and Garamur satras, and Samaguri for masks.

Majuli's culture centres on its satras: Vaishnavite monasteries founded in the tradition of the saint Srimanta Sankardev. They preserve dance, drama, music and crafts. Here's how to make the most of it.
Satras worth visiting
- Auniati Satra: known for Paalnaam devotional singing and Apsara dance, with a collection of old artefacts.
- Dakhinpat Satra: associated with Raas Leela performances.
- Kamalabari Satra: a centre of performing arts and a good place to see Sattriya culture.
- Garamur Satra: known for its collection of old weapons.
- Samaguri Satra: famous for its mask-making tradition, which has a GI tag. Masks for Bhaona (traditional drama) are made by hand from bamboo, clay and cloth. Ask before photographing artisans at work, and consider buying a small mask directly.
Beyond the satras
- Mishing villages with bamboo stilt houses, and handloom weaving
- Pottery made by hand, without a wheel, in some villages
- River views and birdlife along the banks, especially in winter
A realistic day-trip plan
- 6:30 am: leave Jorhat for Nimati Ghat. Ferry guide
- 8:30 to 10 am: cross to Kamalabari Ghat and hire a car for the day
- 10 am to 1 pm: Auniati, Kamalabari, Dakhinpat satras
- 1 pm: simple lunch near Garamur
- 1:45 pm: Samaguri for mask-making
- About 2:30 pm: return ferry (confirm timing)
- Evening: back in Jorhat for dinner
When to stay overnight
- Raas Mahotsav, around the November full moon, is Majuli's biggest festival, with all-night performances. Book early.
- You're a photographer and want dawn or dusk light on the river.
- You want to cycle slowly between villages.
Many travellers do both: a night on Majuli, then a night back in Jorhat for tea gardens and day trips.

Its Vaishnavite satras and their dance, drama and music; mask-making at Samaguri; Mishing tribal villages; and being one of the world's largest river islands.
When is the Raas festival in Majuli?
Raas Mahotsav is held around the full moon of the Assamese month of Kartik, usually in November. Exact dates change each year.
