A weekend in Jorhat and Majuli: 2 to 3 day itinerary
Quick answer
- Day 1: tea garden and Tocklai, Hoollongapar Gibbon Sanctuary, Raja Maidam and an Assamese dinner.
- Day 2: early ferry to Majuli: satras, Samaguri masks, back by the afternoon boat.
- Day 3 (optional): Sivasagar's Ahom monuments, or a Kaziranga safari.
Base yourself in central Jorhat for all three.

This plan assumes you arrive in Jorhat the evening before Day 1, or on a morning flight or the Jan Shatabdi (it reaches Jorhat Town around 1 pm).
Day 1: Tea and the gibbons
- 6:30 am: drive to Hoollongapar Gibbon Sanctuary, about 19 km away, for the morning calls of the hoolock gibbons.
- 10 am: breakfast, then a tea garden walk. Visit Tocklai if you've arranged it.
- 1 pm: lunch: a thali with khar and masor tenga.
- 3 pm: rest. Assam afternoons are made for it.
- 4:30 pm: Raja Maidam, the Ahom royal burial mound, and an evening in town. See a day in Jorhat town.
- Evening: shop for gamosas or tea; early night.
Day 2: Majuli
- 6:30 am: leave for Nimati Ghat. Confirm the ferry the night before (how to reach Majuli).
- 8 to 9:30 am: cross to Kamalabari Ghat.
- Morning: Auniati, Kamalabari and Dakhinpat satras.
- Lunch: simple local food near Garamur.
- Early afternoon: Samaguri mask-making, then the last practical ferry back.
- Evening: dinner back in Jorhat.
Day 3: Pick one
- Sivasagar: Rang Ghar, Talatal Ghar, Sivadol and the great tanks, about 55 to 60 km away. Day trip guide
- Kaziranga: a jeep safari in the Kohora or Bagori range, roughly 88 km west, from October to May. Kaziranga guide
- Slow day: Dhekiakhowa Bornamghar, Lachit Borphukan's Maidam, and a long lunch.
Budget tips
- Hire one car with a driver for each day trip rather than piecing together transport.
- Share an entire apartment as a group: it's often cheaper per person than several hotel rooms.
- Eat local. Thalis are excellent value.
Where to stay: NOI Homes, central Jorhat

NOI Homes is a boutique homestay on J.B. Road in central Jorhat. There are two 2BHK apartments, each for up to six guests. NOI Homes Elite is always let as the whole apartment, with two bedrooms (Khwaab and Gulmohar). NOI Homes Privé can be booked whole, or as private rooms: Rajwada, the master suite, and Sukoon, the cosy room.
This is the exact plan we suggest to guests. One central base means no packing and unpacking: Majuli, Sivasagar and the tea gardens are all there-and-back trips from J.B. Road.
Every stay includes Wi-Fi, free on-site parking, a fully equipped kitchen and 24×7 on-site help. Breakfast and home-cooked Assamese meals are available on request at an extra charge. See the rooms in the catalogue, or check availability.

Frequently asked questions
Is 2 days enough for Jorhat and Majuli?
Yes, for a first visit: one day for Jorhat's tea gardens and sights, and one for a Majuli day trip by ferry.
Should I stay in Majuli or Jorhat?
Jorhat is the better base for a multi-day trip because the airport, trains and day-trip roads all start there. Add a Majuli night only for festivals or a slower island experience.
Can I do Kaziranga and Majuli in one weekend from Jorhat?
It's possible over three days: Majuli on one day, Kaziranga on another. It's tiring, so three nights is more comfortable.
What is the best season for this itinerary?
October to March. Kaziranga is generally closed from late May to early October, and monsoon floods can affect Majuli ferries.
