Jorhat to Sivasagar: an Ahom heritage day trip

By the NOI Homes team, Jorhat · Published · Last checked

Quick answer

Sivasagar, the old Ahom capital, is about 55 to 60 km east of Jorhat, roughly 1 to 1.5 hours by car.

In one day you can see:

  • Rang Ghar, the 18th-century royal sports pavilion
  • Talatal Ghar and Kareng Ghar, the palace complex
  • Sivadol, on the Borpukhuri tank
  • Joysagar tank, about 318 acres

Add the Charaideo maidams, a UNESCO site, if you start early.

For around six centuries, the Ahom dynasty ruled much of the Brahmaputra valley. Sivasagar (Rangpur) was its capital in the 18th century, before the court moved to Jorhat. A day here completes the story you start at Jorhat's Raja Maidam.

The main sights

  • Rang Ghar: a two-storey oval pavilion from which Ahom royalty watched buffalo fights and games during Rongali Bihu. It was built around 1746 under King Pramatta Singha and is often called one of Asia's oldest surviving amphitheatres.
  • Talatal Ghar and Kareng Ghar: the Ahom palace complex associated with King Rudra Singha, with multi-level brick and stone structures. Kareng Ghar is the part above ground.
  • Sivadol, Vishnudol and Devidol: temples beside the large Borpukhuri (Sivasagar) tank. Sivadol is among the tallest Shiva temples in India.
  • Joysagar tank: one of the largest man-made tanks in India, at around 318 acres, with temples on its banks.
  • Charaideo maidams: the royal burial mounds of the Ahoms, inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2024. It's a detour of about an hour from Sivasagar.

A day plan

  • 7:30 am: leave Jorhat after breakfast.
  • 9 am: Rang Ghar, then Talatal and Kareng Ghar.
  • 12 pm: Sivadol and the tank; lunch in town.
  • 2 pm: Joysagar, or Charaideo if you have time.
  • 5 to 6 pm: back in Jorhat.

Tips

  • Hire a car with a driver for the day. It's the simplest way.
  • Carry water and a hat. The sites are open-air and shade is limited.
  • Check monument timings and ticket fees (Archaeological Survey of India) before you go.
  • Combine with a stop at the Dhekiakhowa Bornamghar on the way back if time allows.
