Jorhat travel guide: everything to plan your trip
Quick answer
Jorhat is a calm tea city in Upper Assam and the gateway to Majuli.
- Reach it by air (Jorhat Airport, about 6 km from town), by rail (Jorhat Town station; Jan Shatabdi from Guwahati in about 6 hrs 45 min) or by road.
- Best time: October to March.
- Plan 2 to 4 days, using the city as a base for Majuli, tea gardens, Sivasagar and Kaziranga.

Why visit Jorhat
Jorhat was the last capital of the Ahom kingdom, from 1794. Today it's the centre of one of the world's great tea-growing regions. It's the jumping-off point for Majuli, a river island with Vaishnavite satras and mask-making traditions. Kaziranga's rhinos and the old Ahom capital of Sivasagar are both within day-trip range.
How to reach Jorhat
- By air: Jorhat Airport (JRH) has flights operated by IndiGo and Alliance Air. See airport to city.
- By train: Jorhat Town (JTTN) is in the city. Mariani Junction, about 16 km away, has more long-distance trains. The Jan Shatabdi links Guwahati and Jorhat Town, covering about 376 km in roughly 6 hrs 45 min. See our station guide.
- By road: Jorhat is on the main Upper Assam corridor, with buses and shared cars from Guwahati, Dibrugarh and Sivasagar.
Best time to visit
- October to March: dry, pleasant and best for sightseeing. Bhogali Bihu falls in mid-January.
- April to May: hot and humid, with fresh tea plucking. Rongali Bihu falls in mid-April.
- June to September: monsoon. It's lush, but rain can disrupt Majuli ferries and roads.
Getting around
Hire a car with a driver for day trips; your host can usually arrange one. Autos and e-rickshaws cover short hops in town. Keep UPI and some cash handy.
Suggested plans
- 2 days: tea garden and Tocklai, Raja Maidam, the Gibbon Sanctuary; then a Majuli day trip
- 3 days: add a Sivasagar day trip
- 4 days: add a Kaziranga safari between October and May
- See the full weekend itinerary.
Practical tips
- Ferry and safari timings change by season. Confirm locally the day before.
- Carry a light layer from November to February; mornings are cool and foggy.
- Dress modestly at satras and namghars, and remove footwear where asked.
- Read what to pack.
